How to prolong the life of your vape coils

January 18, 2018

Keeping your coil in good working order can not only keep the cost of vaping down but will also ensure you have a better experience.

How you vape and how well you look after your coils can help improve their lifespan. Depending on how much you vape, you can expect your coil to last anywhere from a week to a month.

Today we're looking at some of the tried and tested tips to prolong the life of your coil, as recommended by the vaping community.

Stay away from sweet

Sweet e-liquids have added sweeteners in them to give them their flavour, and while they taste delicious, they also put more strain on your coil. Sweetener tends to clog up your coil, so if you're vaping regularly, choose e-liquids that have a little less sweetness to them, like a menthol or fruit flavour.

Don't dry burn

Many vapers will dry burn their coils to clean them, and while it's an effective method in the short term, it can decrease their lifespan overall.  Many vapers also report that dry burning coils also causes build-up to happen more quickly.

Build your own

If you want to cut down the cost of coils, the simplest way is to start building them yourself. Many devoted vapers swear handmade coils last longer and though it requires a little extra effort, ultimately will help you save money in the long run.

Avoid colouring

Adding food colouring to e-liquids makes them look stylish, especially if you have a clear tank, but they can also be hard on your coil. Save coloured e-liquids for special occasions and choose clear e-liquids where possible for your everyday vape.

Take your time

'Chain vaping', or taking multiple deep puffs in quick succession, can place a strain on your coil because the wick struggles to cope with the volume. If you take your time and wait 20 or 30 seconds between puffs, the coil has time to cool down and recover and will last longer.

Choose quality

Choosing quality materials or pre-made coils might mean a slightly higher upfront cost but usually amounts to savings in the long run, as cheap coils tend to burn out quickly - sometimes in a matter of hours or days.

Choose a lower wattage

Lowering your wattage will also place less strain on your coil as well and help extend its lifespan. If you prefer high wattage, make peace with the fact you'll go through your coil faster than a vaper who chooses a lower wattage.

Prime your coils

When it is time to replace your coil, prime the new one by saturating the wick and then starting at a lower wattage than normal and taking a shorter hit. Slowly increase the wattage and the length of the drag up to your normal setting.
